Reading and writing are essential to success in marketing, sales and service occupations.  Whether taking inventory, completing safety checks, following written instructions, or submitting orders, the ability to communicate with customers and co-workers, work collaboratively, follow directions and correctly complete forms are all important skills in the marketing, sales and service industry. The industry relies on individuals to ensure transactions between the service and customers are conducted in a timely, courteous and professional manner.

Math skills are also key in the hospitality and tourism industry. Numbers can be sorted and grouped into charts to track patterns in sales and customer satisfaction. Although many sales transactions are computerized, knowing how to add, subtract and estimate are all helpful skills when working one-on-one with clients and customers. The ability to project sales numbers for the upcoming year and how to calculate averages and percentages of sales are all important math skills used in this industry.
